The goal of safe space training in physical therapy is to directly affect the climate that LGBTQ+ individuals engage in (academic and clinical settings) and to provide an environment for patients and students in which they feel valued and safe. Boostrom (1998) critiqued the use of “safe space” training asserting that bravery is needed because “learning necessarily involves not merely risk, but the pain of giving up a former condition in favor of a new way of seeing things”. Through this course, physical therapy providers and educators will be provided the necessary tools to treat and educate their LGBTQ+ patients and students with cultural humility as well as understand the mechanisms to lead the change within their own institutions to create safe, accepting, affirming, inclusive and welcoming environments.
